Many people associate video analysis with professional soccer: large coaching staffs, expensive systems, dedicated analyst teams. Our everyday work looks different. ATHLYZER is used in around ten sports – from youth teams to national teams, in club sport as well as in para and deaf sport and in the training of match analysts. Here is an overview of where and how.
Soccer: from youth teams to federations
In soccer, clubs from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg work with ATHLYZER – from youth teams to the Vorarlberg Football Association. Alex Naimoli, assistant coach for analysis at TSV Havelse, explains how video analysis can support a successful season in our interview (German). Our report on TuS Koblenz (German) gives insight into the analysis work at a traditional club.

Hockey: where we come from
Hockey is our origin: our founder Dr. Christoph Mickel played as a goalkeeper in the German Bundesliga. Today, many field and indoor hockey clubs in Germany work with ATHLYZER, along with clubs in Austria, Switzerland and Belgium and the Egyptian Hockey Federation. Two regional associations – the Bavarian and the Hamburg Hockey Federation – cooperate with us.
Our case studies show how differently hockey teams use video: Lucas Lampe of HTHC uses it systematically for team development, opponent analysis and highlight videos (German). At ESV München, ATHLYZER has become an essential part of match preparation (German) and is now also used in goalkeeper training (German). In Bavaria, even referee education works with video clips.

Ice hockey and inline skater hockey
In ice hockey, ATHLYZER is used by the Eisbären Berlin Juniors and Löwen Frankfurt, among others. Our case study (German) describes how Löwen Frankfurt combine team analysis, pre-scouting and technical and tactical video analysis.
In inline skater hockey, the German national team won silver at the 2026 European Championship. The coaching team analysed the games with ATHLYZER and reviewed them with the players at the hotel. Read more: European silver: how the inline skater hockey national team analysed its games.

Handball
In handball, the range spans club sport – for example at HSV Bergtheim – to university sport: Dr. Christian Winter of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz analysed the women's team with ATHLYZER (German) at the European University Championships. For goalkeepers, we have put together a guide to goalkeeper video analysis in handball (German). We introduce the two deaf national teams further below.

Basketball
In basketball, the Lower Saxony Basketball Association works with ATHLYZER, as do clubs at youth and senior level. The software has also been used in wheelchair basketball – more on that in the section on inclusion.

Floorball and other sports
In Switzerland, floorball clubs analyse their games and training sessions with ATHLYZER. This shows that a fully customisable tagging scheme also works in sports without a dedicated template.
ATHLYZER is also used in individual sports: at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, an analyst of the German Taekwondo Union worked with our software, and it is also used at the German Ski Association. In table tennis, we supported a tournament of TTC Rot-Weiss 1921 Biebrich as a sponsor.
Inclusion: video analysis in para and deaf sport
Our work with national teams in para and deaf sport is particularly close to our hearts. This is where the core value of video becomes clear: it makes game situations visible without everything having to be conveyed through spoken language.
- Deafboys: The German men's deaf handball national team has been working with ATHLYZER for several years. Read how head coach Alex Zimpelmann uses video analysis in our report on the Deafboys (German).
- Deafgirls: The women's deaf handball national team also relies on ATHLYZER. Head coach Christiane Weber: “Video analysis gives us the opportunity to develop our playing philosophy, make decisions understandable and give our players concrete images to work with.” More in our article on the Deafgirls.
- Para ice hockey: The German para ice hockey national team of the German Paralympic Committee (DBS) uses ATHLYZER to analyse its international matches and tournaments.
- Wheelchair basketball: The Rhine River Rhinos from Wiesbaden have also worked with ATHLYZER.
For young teams like the Deafgirls in particular, video is a tool to get as much as possible out of every game. Do you coach a team in para or deaf sport and want to try video analysis? Get in touch.
Education: universities and match analysts
Many people who learn match analysis learn it with ATHLYZER. Since 2019, participants of the International Football Institute (IFI) have worked with the software in their courses – including the university certificate “Match Analyst in Professional Football”, the institute certificate in video analysis and the intensive seminar “Match Analysis in Performance Football”. They receive their own access for the duration of the course.
The German University of Health and Sport (DHGS) has also used ATHLYZER in teaching in its degree programme with a focus on soccer.
What do all sports have in common?
Whether hockey, handball or floorball – the workflow is similar everywhere:
- Your own tagging scheme: You define categories based on your playing philosophy. Templates are available as a starting point for several sports.
- Live tagging: Mark scenes while the game is still running.
- Automated playlists: Scenes grouped by category, without manual cutting.
- Drawings: Draw running lines, passing options and spaces directly onto the video.
- Sharing with the team: Show scenes in the team meeting or share them with players directly via Teams.
- All devices: Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
Frequently asked questions
Is ATHLYZER available for my sport?
Most likely, yes. ATHLYZER is not tied to any sport: you create your own tagging scheme. For soccer, hockey, ice hockey, handball, basketball and padel, there are also dedicated sport pages with examples.
Is ATHLYZER suitable for para and deaf sport?
Yes. National teams in deaf handball and para ice hockey work with ATHLYZER. Video makes scenes visible without everything having to be conveyed through spoken language.
How much does ATHLYZER cost?
From €33 per month with annual billing. You can try all plans free for 30 days, no credit card required. Details on the pricing page.
Conclusion
Video analysis is not the privilege of a few sports. What matters is not whether you play with a ball or a puck, but that you capture scenes based on your own criteria and bring them back into training. The best way to find out what that looks like in your sport is to try it yourself.
